Abstract
Abstract A method for forming a curved edge (19) on a lens (11) comprising the steps of providing an annular laser beam (17) and irradiating a first peripheral region (Figure 3) of the lens (11) with the laser beam (17) to remove a layer of lens material from the first peripheral region through ablative photodecomposition. Next, a second peripheral region (Figure 3) of the lens (11) is irradiated with the laser beam (17) to remove a layer of lens material from the second peripheral region.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
71 words
A method for forming a curved edge on a lens comprising the steps of providing an annular laser beam, irradiating a first peripheral region of the lens with the laser beam to remove a layer of lens material from the first peripheral region through ablative photodecomposition, and irradiating a second peripheral region of the lens with the laser beam to remove a layer of lens material from the second peripheral region.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
71 words
A method for forming a curved edge on a lens comprising the steps of providing an annular laser beam, irradiating a first peripheral region of the lens with the laser beam to remove a layer of lens material from the first peripheral region through ablative photodecomposition, and irradiating a second peripheral region of the lens with the laser beam to remove a layer of lens material from the second peripheral region.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
78 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the first peripheral region of the lens is irradiated for a first number of laser shots, the internal diameter of the annular laser beam is changed to expose the second peripheral region of the lens, irradiating the second peripheral region of the lens with the annular laser beam for a second number of laser shots, wherein said second number of laser shots is greater than said first number of laser shots.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
45 words
A method as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the internal diameter of the annular laser beam is increased in a plurality of small steps with the number of laser shots to which successive peripheral regions of the lens is exposed being increased at each step.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
29 words
A method as claimed in Claim 2 or 3 wherein the fluence of the laser beam is preferably maintained constant during exposure of successive peripheral regions of the lens.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
21 words
A method according to any preceding claim wherein the annular laser beam is produced by imaging a mask onto a lens.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
14 words
A method according to Claim 5 wherein the mask is preferably a circular disc.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
25 words
A method according to any one of Claims 1 to 4 wherein the annular laser beam is produced using a focussing lens and axicon lens.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
15 words
A method according to Claim 7 wherein the axicon lens is a diverging axicon lens.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
15 words
A method according to Claim 7 wherein the axicon lens is a converging axicon lens.
