Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 88 words
A guide wire comprising: a core (18), having a proximal and distal end portion, and a plastic jacket (38) enclosing said core, characterised in said plastic jacket comprises: a proximal jacket portion (40) formed of a first plastic material, and a distal jacket portion (42) formed of a second plastic material, the distal end of said proximal jacket portion and the proximal end of said distal jacket portion being of equal outer diameters so as to form a smooth transition between said proximal and said distal jacket portions.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 17 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 1 wherein said distal jacket portion is made of polyurethane.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said proximal jacket portion is made of Teflon (Registered Trade Mark).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said distal jacket portion has radiopaque properties.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 4 wherein said distal jacket portion is loaded with a material selected from bismuth, barium, and tungsten.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims comprising a marker (56) located around a distal end (58) of said core beneath said plastic jacket.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 6 wherein said marker is substantially radiopaque.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said distal jacket portion has a hydrophilic coating.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 8 wherein the proximal jacket portion does not have a hydrophilic coating.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said core is formable in at least a portion thereof.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 16 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 10 wherein said core is made of stainless steel.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 29 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 10 or claim 11 in which the core is formable in a distal portion thereof and non-formable in a proximal portion thereof.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 52 words
A method for making a guide wire comprising the steps of: heat shrinking a proximal jacket of Teflon (Registered Trade Mark) onto a proximal end of a core wire; and heating a jacket of polyurethane to a temperature until it is reformed around and encases a distal portion of the core wire.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 37 words
A method as claimed in claim 13 including the step of: finishing the outside surfaces of the jackets of Teflon (Registered Trade Mark) and polyurethane by centerless grinding so that the transition between the jackets is smooth.
