Abstract

Abstract A four-row laparoscopic surgical stapler (10) cutting mechanism is described wherein stapling and cutting are remotely accomplished. Further, there is disclosed closure means (25) which enable closure and stapling of the apparatus. Finally, such closure can take place either using lever (25) or collar type means. This stapling apparatus (10) is useful in performing surgical stapling functions through the cannula of a surgical trocar.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 50 words
A remotely operated surgical stapler configured to fit within a hollow cannula comprising: a tubular sheath having two open ends, an actuating mechanism positioned at one end of said sheath; and a stapling mechanism positioned at the opposite end of said sheath, said actuating mechanism remotely actuating said stapling mechanism.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 32 words
The stapler of claim 1 wherein said stapling mechanism includes a firing mechanism for driving staples and an anvil mechanism for clinching staples, said anvil mechanism pivotable relative to said firing mechanism.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The stapler of claim 2 wherein said anvil and firing mechanisms pivot in close proximity, such that it is possible to fire staples from said firing mechanism into said anvil mechanism.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
The stapler of claim 3 wherein said sheath is slidable and when said anvil mechanism and firing mechanism are in close proximity, said sheath is positioned around said anvil and said firing mechanisms.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 106 words
A remotely operated surgical stapler configured to fit within a hollow cannula, comprising: a tubular sheath having two open ends; an actuating mechanism positioned at one end of said sheath; a stapling mechanism connected through said sheath to said actuating mechanism and positioned at the opposite end of said sheath, said stapling mechanism including an anvil portion and firing portion, said anvil portion pivoted about said firing portion, such that said anvil portion comes into close proximity to said firing portion in order to fire staples into said anvil portion; and a closure mechanism to bring said anvil portion and said firing portion into close proximity.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
The stapler of claim 5 wherein said sheath is slidable and when said anvil mechanism and firing mechanism are in close proximity, said sheath is positioned around said anvil and said firing mechanisms.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 42 words
The stapler of claim 3 or claim 5 wherein said actuating mechanism is connected to a lever, said lever contacting said anvil and said firing mechanisms, said lever pivoting about said anvil mechanism to bring said firing mechanism in close proximity therewith.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
The surgical stapler of claim 3 or claim 5 wherein said sheath fits within a cannula of about 11 mm diameter.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 51 words
The surgical stapler of claim 3 or claim 5 wherein said firing mechanism is a ramp, said ramp attached to said actuating mechanism, said ramp interacting with drivers for driving staplers such that when said ramp contact said drivers, said staples are expelled from said firing mechanism toward said anvil mechanism.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
The stapler of claim 3 or claim 5 further including knife means attached to said actuating means and operated between said firing mechanism and said anvil mechanism.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 44 words
A surgical stapler comprising an anvil portion and a firing portion, said anvil portion pivotable relative to said firing portion, said firing portion attached to said actuating means, and closure means for pivoting said anvil and firing portions into close proximity of one another.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
The stapler of claim 11 wherein said closure means comprises a sheath slidable over said anvil portion and firing portion, said sheath approximating said anvil and firing portions.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 35 words
The stapler of claim 11 wherein said closure means comprises a lever forming said anvil portion, said lever causing said anvil portion to pivot about said firing portion and into proximity to said firing portion.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 42 words
The stapler of claim 11 wherein said closure means comprises a cam means which contacts follower means on said anvil portion, said follower means forced by said cam means to cause said anvil portion to pivot into proximity to said firing portion.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 20 words
The stapler of claim 2 wherein said anvil mechanism is stationary such that pivoting takes place on said firing mechanism.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 20 words
The stapler of claim 11 wherein said anvil portion is stationary, and said firing portion pivots about said anvil portion.
