Abstract

Abstract A temporary circulatory assist pump (14) is disclosed for implantation in the heart (12) of a patient through the femoral artery. The pump (14) is driven by a flexible drive shaft (30) extending through a catheter (16) and being connected to a power source outside the body of the patient. The pump (14) utilizes a helical-shaped foil impeller (38) to pump blood at a rate of approximately three to four liters per minute through the circulatory system of the patient.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 109 words
A temporary circulatory assist pump, comprising: (a) an elongate, cylindrical housing having at least one intake port and at least one discharge port, said housing being sized for passage through a human blood vessel and insertion into a heart; (b) pump means within said housing for assisting the heart of a patient to pump blood, said pump means including impeller means for pumping blood therethrough; (c) wherein said housing includes discharge means for discharging blood into the vascular system of the patient; (d) extravascular power means connected to said pump means for driving said impeller means; and (e) drive shaft means connecting said pump means to said power means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 109 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
The pump of Claim 1 wherein said impeller means comprises a helical-shaped foil impeller positioned within said housing and cooperating with said housing to form a continuous rotating fluid passage.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The pump of Claim 2 wherein said impeller includes an airfoil profile defining a low and high pressure area upon rotation of said impeller.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The pump of Claim 3 including drive shaft stabilizer means for centrally supporting said drive shaft means within said cylindrical housing.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
The pump of Claim 1 wherein said cylindrical housing carrying said pump means is mounted to the distal end of a catheter and guided to the heart of a patient by said catheter.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
The pump of Claim 3 wherein said helical-shaped foil impeller defines a profile which tapers from a leading end to a trailing end.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
The pump of Claim 2 wherein said helical-shaped foil impeller is driven at a rotational speed in the range of 4,000 to 10,000 rpm.
