Abstract
Abstract An angioplasty catheter system is disclosed which allows insertion and removal of a guidewire through the inner member of the catheter, yet which inner member includes a portion which is smaller than the cross-section of portions of the guidewire. Advancement and removal of the guidewire are achieved by forming the first portion of the inner member of the catheter shaft from material which is expandable, or which is sufficiently thin to be folded and temporarily secured in place using several techniques.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
108 words
An angioplasty catheter system comprising: a guidewire extending over a first length, the guidewire having a first smaller cross-section at a first location of the first length and a second larger cross-section at a second location of the first length; a catheter shaft extending over a second length and including an opening therethrough for the guidewire, the opening having a cross-section at a first portion of the second length which cross-section is larger than the first smaller cross-section of the guidewire and smaller than the second larger cross-section of the guidewire; and means for allowing expansion of the opening at the first portion to the second larger cross-section.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

An angioplasty catheter system comprising: a guidewire extending over a first length, the guidewire having a first smaller cross-section at a first location of the first length and a second larger cross-section at a second location of the first length; a catheter shaft extending over a second length and including an opening therethrough for the guidewire, the opening having a cross-section at a first portion of the second length which cross-section is larger than the first smaller cross-section of the guidewire and smaller than the second larger cross-section of the guidewire; and means for allowing expansion of the opening at the first portion in response to passage of the second location of the guidewire.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
25 words
The system of claim 2 wherein the means for allowing expansion comprises: providing the first portion of the catheter shaft from material capable of expansion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
30 words
The system of claim 2 wherein the means for allowing expansion comprises: providing the first portion of the catheter shaft from material which is folded and temporarily secured in place.
