Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
278 words
A system (10) for excising obstructive matter from a lumen of a living being comprising: a guide wire (110) insertable into said lumen; a support sheath (418) having a proximal end and a distal end and a torque tube (218) having a proximal end and a distal end, said support sheath (418) and said torque tube (218) being insertable into the lumen over the guide wire (110), wherein the support sheath (418) is adapted to be arranged over the torque tube (218); a cutter (316) connected to the distal end of the torque tube (218); and means (410) connected to the support sheath (418) for selectively controlling the extent to which the cutter (316) on the distal end of the torque tube (218) extends from the distal end of the support sheath (418), said means (410) comprising: a substantially cylindrical-shaped hollow housing (412); a tube shaped insert (416) coaxially aligned and slidingly disposed within said housing (412), said insert (416) having its distal end connected to the support sheath (418); a releasable insert holding means mounted on said housing (412) for selectively moving said insert (416) within said housing (412); a hollow cylindrical base (326); a hollow cylindrical tip (344) coaxially distanced from said base (326); and a hollow frustum (328) coaxially aligned intermediate and respectively attached to said base (326) and said tip (344), said frustum formed with a first opening to establish a first cutting edge (334) and a second opening to establish a second cutting edge (334), wherein said first opening is larger than said second opening in said frustum (328) to establish said first cutting edge (334) longer than said second cutting edge (334).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
49 words
A system according to Claim 1, wherein the guide wire (110) comprises a main shaft (114) having a proximal end and a distal end, and an abutment (116) attached to the distal end of the main shaft (114) to prevent movement of the cutter (316) past said abutment (116).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
26 words
A system according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the torque tube (218) comprises a liner (270), and a wire (272) wound around the liner (270).
Claim 4
Independent Claim
34 words
A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the diameter of said tip (344) of the cutter (316) is less than the diameter of said base (326) of the cutter (316).
Claim 5
Independent Claim
36 words
A system according to any one of Claims 2 to 4, wherein the diameter of said tip (344) of the cutter (316) is less than the diameter of said abutment (416) of the guide wire (110).
Claim 6
Independent Claim
63 words
A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the releasable insert holding means of the controlling means (410) comprises a ring-shaped cap (414) threadably engageable with said cylindrical-shaped hollow housing (412) for squeezing an O-ring (432) positioned between said cap (414) and said housing (412) against said tube-shaped insert (416) when said cap (414) is engaged with said housing (412).
Claim 7
Independent Claim
19 words
A system according to any preceding claim, further comprising means for withdrawing obstructive cuttings of matter from the lumen.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
20 words
A system according to Claim 7, wherein the means for withdrawing obstructive cuttings of matter comprises a vacuum source (20).
Claim 9
Independent Claim
20 words
A system according to any preceding claim, further comprising means for rotating the cutter (316) about the guide wire (110).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
15 words
A system according to Claim 9, wherein the rotating means comprises an electric motor (22).
Claim 11
Independent Claim
35 words
A system according to any one of Claims 2 to 10, wherein said main shaft (114) is formed with a flat ribbon (126) proximal said abutment (116) to bias bending of said main shaft (114).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
45 words
A system according to Claim 11 further comprising a helically wound wire coil (118) which is positioned in a surrounding relationship over said ribbon, said coil (118) having one end attached to said abutment (116) and an opposite end attached to said main shaft (114).
Claim 13
Independent Claim
21 words
A system according to any preceding claim, wherein the support sheath (418) comprises a polyamide tube which is coated with urethane.
