Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim
101 words
An implant (10;61;70;81;200;300) for fusion of two adjacent vertebrae (V) in the spine, said implant (10;61;70;81;200;300) comprising a generally rectangular member formed by upper and lower walls (12,14), end walls (22,38) and side walls (16,18), said member having a height substantially equal to the height of the space created by a removed disc from between two adjacent vertebrae (V), characterized in that said member has a plurality of openings (20,36;63;100;324) in said upper, lower, and side walls (12,14,16,18) for receiving and retaining cancellous bone, and said member being made of a bone ingrowth material for promoting bone ingrowth into said member.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
41 words
The implant of claim 1, characterized in that said rectangular member (61) has a plurality of ratchet like members (62) facing in the same direction on the upper and lower surfaces of said member (61) for engagement with adjacent vertebrae (V).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
35 words
The implant of claim 2, characterized in that said ratchet like members (62) on the upper and lower faces face in different directions to prevent movement of the adjacent vertebrae (V) relative to each other.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
The implant of claim 1, characterized in which said implant has a tapered portion (24) at one end (22).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
52 words
The implant of claim 1, characterized in that the rectangular member is separable into an upper portion (84) and a lower portion (82), and comprises a wedge means (86,88) fitted between said upper portion (84) and said lower portion (82) for forcing said upper portion (84) away from said lower portion (82).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
55 words
The implant of claim 5, characterized in that said wedge means (86, 88) comprises a central threaded opening (90,92) with a threaded screw (94) connecting two of said wedges (86,88), whereby turning said threaded screw (94) draws said wedges (86,88) together and forces said upper portion (84) and lower portion (81) away from each other.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
18 words
The implant of claim 6, characterized in that said implant (81) has a plurality of holes (100) therethrough.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
The implant of claim 6, characterized in that said upper and lower surface of said implant has projections (106) for engaging the vertebrae.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
53 words
The implant of claim 1, characterized in that said implant (300) has a plurality of slots (306) in the upper and lower surfaces (302,304) and a plurality of pivotal members (307) movable between a first position within said implant (300) and a second position outside of said implant (300) through said slots (306).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
36 words
The implant of claim 1, characterized in that said rectangular member (10) has an enclosed interior chamber, said interior chamber being accessible through an access opening (33) in a wall (12) of said rectangular member (10).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
23 words
The implant of claim 10, characterized in including a removable cap (32) for covering said access opening (33) to enclose said interior chamber.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
19 words
The implant of claim 10, characterized in that said implant (10) is substantially the dimensions of a removed disc.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
30 words
The implant of claim 10, characterized in that said implant (10) comprises a front wall (22) having an threaded opening (26) therein for engagement with a threaded driving member (30),
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
18 words
The implant of claim 13, characterized in that said front wall (22) has a driver engaging portion (24).
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
20 words
The implant of claim 14, characterized in that said engaging means comprises a depression (24) on the front wall (22)
Claim 16
Dependent Claim
20 words
The implant of claim 11, characterized in that said removable cap (32) includes threads for attachment to said implant (10).
