Abstract

Abstract A joint construction for a medical guide wire joining a tubular member (282 or 331) to a helical coil (288) has an elongate element extending therethrough. The tubular member has an outside diameter no greater than the outside diameter of the coil. A wall of the tubular member defines a passage extending through the tubular member and has an exterior surface. The tubular member has an end portion with a helical recess (286 or 333) formed therein extending through the outer surface to form a helical thread. The helical coil has a passage extending therethrough and an end portion threaded into the helical recess which fixedly secures the coil to the tubular member so that the passage in the tubular member and the passage in the coil are in alignment.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 146 words
A device (281) for use in measuring a characteristic of liquid flow in a vessel comprising a flexible elongate tubular element having proximal and distal extremities with a passage (283) extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity and having a wall defined by the distal extremity of the flexible elongate element, a coil spring having a distal extremity, a transducer (302) carried by the distal extremity of the coil spring (288) and conductive means (311, 312) connected to the transducer and extending interiorly of the coil spring and through the passage (283) in the flexible elongate tubular element, characterized by the distal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member being provided with threads (286) therein, the coil spring (288) being threaded into said threads and being secured thereby to the distal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member to form a mechanical connection therebetween.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 40 words
A device as in Claim 1 further characterized in that the wall of the tubular member has an exterior surface and that the threads (286) are formed in the exterior surface of the wall of the flexible elongate tubular member.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
A device as in Claim 2 further characterized in that the threads extend through the wall.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 34 words
A device as in any one of claims 1 to 3 further characterized in that the threads have a density ranging from 2.95 to 6 threads per mm (75 to 150 threads per inch).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A device as in Claim 4 further characterized in that the threads have a density of approximately 4.3 threads per mm (108 threads per inch).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 22 words
A device as in any one of claims 1 to 5 further characterized in that approximately 1.5 to 5.0 threads are provided.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 27 words
A device as in any one of claims 1 to 6 further characterized in that the threads only extend partially through the wall of the tubular member.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
A device as in Claim 7 further characterized in that the threads are rectangular in cross section.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 119 words
A device as in Claim 1, further characterized in that a tip (296) is provided, said tip being formed of a cylindrical member having a wall defining a passage extending therethrough, the wall having an exterior surface, said tip having proximal and distal extremities, threads (297) formed on the proximal extremity of the tip securing the proximal extremity of the tip to the distal extremity of the coil spring, said tip having a recess (301) formed therein axially aligned with said passage and facing outwardly axially of the tip, said transducer (302) being disposed within said recess of the tip and means (304) securing the transducer (302) to the tip so that the transducer is disposed within the recess.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 42 words
A device as in Claim 9 further characterized in that the transducer (302) is provided with front and rear sides and wherein the front and rear sides are free to move and wherein the conductors extend through the passage to the tip.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 34 words
A device as in Claims 9 or 10 further characterized in that the threads of the tip have a density measuring from 2.95 to 6 threads per mm (75 to 150 threads per inch).
Claim 12
Independent Claim 25 words
A device as in any one of Claims 9 to 11 further characterized in that approximately 2.5 to 5.0 threads are provided in the tip.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 30 words
A device as in any one of Claims 9 to 12 further characterized in that the distal extremity of the coil spring is threaded into the threads of the tip.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 118 words
A device as in any one of Claims 1 to 13 further characterized in that said coil spring is formed of two separate coils (288,291) of two different materials, an intermediate joint (331) connecting the two coils, the intermediate joint comprising a cylindrical member having a wall provided with an exterior surface and opposite ends, threads formed in the opposite ends of the cylindrical member, one of said two coils being threaded into the threads on one end of said cylindrical member and the other of said two coils being threaded into the threads on the other end of said cylindrical member whereby the two separate coils and the cylindrical member are mechanically connected into a unitary assembly.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 24 words
A device as in Claim 14 further characterized in that the threads of the cylindrical member extend through the exterior surface of the wall.
Claim 16
Independent Claim 36 words
A device as in Claims 14 or 15 further characterized in that the threads of the cylindrical member have a density ranging from approximately 2.95 to 6 threads per mm (75 to 150 threads per inch).
