Abstract

Abstract An instrument for the deployment or retraction of a self-expanding stent (10) in a body canal (4), which comprises an elongated tubular outer sleeve (1) having disposed therein an elongated core (5) which is movable relative to said sleeve (1) and has a grip member (9) formed at or near its distal end, which grip member (9) is adapted to releasably hold a self-expanding stent (10) within said outer sleeve (1).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 20
Claim 1
Independent Claim 170 words
An instrument for the deployment or retraction of a self-expanding stent 10 in a body canal 4, characterized in that it comprises an elongated tubular outer sleeve 1 having a proximal end and a distal end 3, an elongated core 5 disposed within said sleeve and movable relative to said sleeve, said core being longer than said sleeve and having a proximal end and a distal end 7 and including a grip member 9 at or near said distal end of the core, said grip member being an integral portion of the core or a sleeve or coating attached around the periphery of the core and being adapted to: (i) releasably hold a self-expanding stent 10 within said outer sleeve, (ii) deploy said stent beyond the distal end of said outer sleeve when said outer sleeve is moved in a backward direction relative to said core and (iii) retract said stent back within said outer sleeve when said core is pulled in a backward direction relative to said outer sleeve.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 170 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
An instrument according to claim 1, characteried in that said core is hollow.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
An instrument according to claim 2, characterized in that it includes an elongated flexible, steerable guide wire 8 located within and along the axis of said core.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
An instrument according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that said core has a handle 6 attached to its proximal end to facilitate movement at the core relative to the outer sleeve.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 38 words
An instrument according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the proximal end of said outer sleeve terminates in a flange or handle 2 to facilitate movement of the outer sleeve relative to said core.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
An instrument according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said grip member is a sleeve of material with a friction contact surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 46 words
An instrument according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that said grip member is made from a material that will take a set and is either an integral portion of said core or a sleeve attached around the periphery of the core.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 18 words
An instrument according to claim 7, characterized in that said material is a silicone rubber or a polyurethane.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 61 words
An instrument according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that said grip member comprises a coating of a releasable adhesive; or said grip member is a sleeve of material having an outer surface which is substantially smooth and unbroken; or said grip member is a sleeve of material having an outer surface which is roughened or irregular.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 44 words
An instrument according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that said core is made from a high friction material and said grip member comprises a length of said core having a larger outer diameter than the remainder of the core.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 16 words
An instrument according to claim 10, characterized in that said high friction material is a polyurethane.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 33 words
An instrument according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that it includes one or more marker elements 17, each located at a predetermined position on the outer sleeve or core.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 30 words
An instrument according to claim 12, characterized in that each of said marker elements is a band of metal or radiopaque material attached to the periphery of the outer sleeve.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 26 words
An instrument according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said outer sleeve is a hollow catheter made from a low friction material.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 15 words
An instrument according to claim 14, characterized in that said low friction material is polytetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 32 words
An instrument according to claim 14 or 15, characterized in that the inner surface of the catheter has a layer of hardened material to prevent damage by the ends of the stent.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 29 words
An instrument according to any one of claims 14 to 16, characterized in that the soft distal end of the catheter has a protective hard hollow rim attached thereto.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 38 words
An instrument according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said grip member is provided with circumferential gaps 12, 13 adjacent its distal end and proximal end to accommodate the ends 11 of the stent.
Claim 20
Dependent Claim 26 words
An instrument according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a flexible filiform 18 is attached to the distal end of the core.
