Abstract

Abstract An improved vascular catheter (10) having a tubular member (13) of composite structure with a tubular substrate (21) and a resin-impregnated fibrous covering (22) extending over a substantial part of the length thereof. The tubular substrate which is longitudinally flexible but relatively inextendible, is preferably polyimide tubing with a lubricous coating on the inner surface thereof defining an inner lumen (16). The fibrous covering is preferably epoxy-impregnated aramid or polyester (Dacron) multi-filament fibers. The strands (24) are snugly wrapped about the tubular substrate and then impregnated with a suitable resin. One or more of the strands in the distal portion are at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular substrate between about 20° and about 45° greater than the angle of one or more strands in the proximal portion. Individual strand wraps in the distal portion are at an angle of about 60° to about 85° and strand wraps in such as the proximal portion are at an angle of about 30° to about 60°. The composite tubular member is preferably utilized in balloon dilatation catheters used in angioplasty procedures.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 60 words
A vascular catheter for angioplasty procedures having an elongated catheter body with an inflatable balloon on the distal extremity thereof characterized by a tubular member having a longitudinally flexible tubular substructure with a resin-impregnated first fibrous layer extending from the proximal to the distal end thereof which is formed from at least one continuous strand wrapped around the tubular substructure.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 60 words
A vascular catheter for angioplasty procedures having an elongated catheter body with an inflatable balloon on the distal extremity thereof characterized by a tubular member having a longitudinally flexible tubular substructure with a resin-impregnated first fibrous layer extending from the proximal to the distal end thereof which is formed from at least one continuous strand wrapped around the tubular substructure.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
The catheter of claim 1 wherein the tubular member is an outer member of the catheter body which has an inflatable balloon secured by the proximal end thereof to the distal end of the tubular member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
The catheter of claim 2 wherein the distal end of the balloon is secured to a guiding element which extends through the interior of the balloon and out the distal end thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
The catheter of claim 1 wherein the tubular member is an inner member of the catheter body and has the inflatable balloon secured by the distal end thereof to the distal end of the tubular member.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 61 words
The catheter of any one of the preceding claims wherein the tubular member has a second resin-impregnated fibrous layer which extends over the first fibrous layer from the proximal end of the tubular member to a location proximal to the distal end of the tubular member and which is formed from at least one continuous strand wrapped over the first layer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
The catheter of any one of the preceding claims wherein the strand is made from a material selected from the group consisting of aramid, nylon and polyester.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
The catheter of any one of the preceding claims wherein the wraps of the continuous strand about the tubular substructure are disposed immediately adjacent to preceding and following wraps.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 39 words
The catheter of any one of the preceding claims wherein the continuous strand is wrapped about the distal portion of the tubular substructure at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof between about 60° and about 85°.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 35 words
The catheter of claim 8 wherein the continuous strand is wrapped about the proximal portion of the tubular substructure at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof between about 30° and about 60°.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 43 words
The catheter of any one of the preceding claims wherein the continuous strand is wrapped about the proximal portion of the tubular substructure with the wraps longitudinally spaced from each other a distance of about 2-6 times the width of the wrapped strand.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
The vascular catheter of any one of the preceding claims wherein the impregnated resin is an epoxy resin.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 53 words
The vascular catheter of any one of the preceding claims wherein the continuous strand is wrapped about the distal portion of the tubular substructure at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof between about 30° to about 45° greater than the strand wraps on the proximal portion of the tubular member.
