Abstract

Abstract A piezoelectric pump 22 or equivalent transducer is mounted on or within an ink jet printhead and is used to modulate the frequency or amplitude, or both, of oscillations of a liquid meniscus at a liquid ejection orifice 17 of a nozzle plate 16. The liquid meniscus at the orifice 17 has a natural resonant frequency and amplitude with respect to its equilibrium position 19, and the above modulation is performed in a controlled timed relation with respect to the phase of the natural oscillations of the meniscus at the liquid ejection orifice 17.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 89 words
A method of controlling the amplitude and frequency of oscillations of the meniscus at a fluid ejection orifice which comprises the steps of: a. ejecting fluid through an orifice 17 and at a natural resonant frequency and amplitude with respect to an equilibrium position 19, and b. modulating the frequency or amplitude or both of the fluid meniscus at said orifice 17 in a controlled phase relation with respect to the phase position of the oscillations of said meniscus above or below the said equilibrium position (Figs. 3B, 3C).
Claim 2
Independent Claim 89 words
A method of controlling the amplitude and frequency of oscillations of the meniscus at a fluid ejection orifice which comprises the steps of: a. ejecting fluid through an orifice 17 and at a natural resonant frequency and amplitude with respect to an equilibrium position 19, and b. modulating the frequency or amplitude or both of the fluid meniscus at said orifice 17 in a controlled phase relation with respect to the phase position of the oscillations of said meniscus above or below the said equilibrium position (Figs. 3B, 3C).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
The method defined in claim 1 which includes modulating the frequency or amplitude of said fluid meniscus by electrically pulsing a piezoelectric crystal 22 adjacent said fluid to produce timed pressure waves therein which are operative to modulate said meniscus about its said equilibrium position 19.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 91 words
A system for controlling the amplitude and frequency of oscillations of the meniscus of a fluid ejection orifice comprising: a. means 11 for ejecting fluid through an orifice and at a natural resonant frequency and amplitude with respect to an equilibrium position, and b. means 22 adjacent to said ejecting means for modulating the frequency or amplitude or both of the fluid meniscus at said orifice in a controlled phase relation with respect to the phase position of the oscillations of said meniscus above or below the said equilibrium position 19.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 91 words
A system for controlling the amplitude and frequency of oscillations of the meniscus of a fluid ejection orifice comprising: a. means 11 for ejecting fluid through an orifice and at a natural resonant frequency and amplitude with respect to an equilibrium position, and b. means 22 adjacent to said ejecting means for modulating the frequency or amplitude or both of the fluid meniscus at said orifice in a controlled phase relation with respect to the phase position of the oscillations of said meniscus above or below the said equilibrium position 19.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
The system defined in claim 3 wherein said modulating means includes a piezoelectric crystal 22 mounted adjacent said fluid for introducing timed pressure waves therein which are operative to modulate said meniscus about its equilibrium position in said orifice 17.
