Abstract

Abstract A heart valve comprises a valve member (60) removably engaged with a sewing ring (20). The sewing ring defines a cylindrical inner surface and the valve member has a cylindrical outer surface corresponding to the cylindrical inner surface of the sewing ring, the inner surface of the sewing ring being spaced from the outer surface of the valve member, the inner and outer surfaces of the sewing ring and the valve member, respectively, being free of inwardly and outwardly directed protrusions, respectively. The valve member is attached to the sewing ring by means of sutures (82,84,86), whereby the valve member may be removed from the sewing ring by passage of a blade circumferentially around the valve member in the space between the valve member and the sewing ring.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 133 words
A heart valve comprising a valve member (60) removably engageable with a sewing ring (20), characterised in that said sewing ring defines a cylindrical inner surface (31) and said valve member has a cylindrical outer surface corresponding to the cylindrical inner surface of said sewing ring, said inner surface of said sewing ring being spaced from said outer surface of said valve member, said inner and outer surfaces of said sewing ring and said valve member, respectively, being free of inwardly and outwardly directed protrusions, respectively, and said valve member being attachable to said sewing ring by means of sutures (82,84,86), whereby said valve member may be removed from said sewing ring by passage of a blade circumferentially around said valve member in the space between said valve member and said sewing ring.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 133 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
A valve as claimed in claim 1 comprising slots on the sewing ring for receiving sutures; and sutures on the valve member generally adjacent the slots when the valve member is mounted in the sewing ring.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A valve as claimed in claim 2 wherein the slots comprise pairs of openings and the sutures are in pairs, each suture of a pair having a needle.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 47 words
A valve as claimed in claim 1 comprising sutures extending through the wall of the valve means and slots in the sewing ring for receiving the sutures whereby knots on the sutures outside of the sewing ring hold the valve means in place within the sewing ring.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 104 words
A valve as claimed in any preceding claim wherein said sewing ring has a main ring forming a central bore, the ring having an inner surface towards the central bore and an outer surface, the outer surface including two annular grooves; first and second O-rings sized to fit the two grooves on the main ring; and cloth for forming a sewing ring, mounted by first surrounding the ring, then by having the cloth held to the ring by mounting the first and second O-rings over the cloth, and the cloth being sewn in place around the O-rings on the outer surface of the ring.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 100 words
A prosthetic heart valve comprising: a sewing ring having a main ring forming a central bore, the ring having an inner surface towards the central bore and an outer surface, the outer surface including two annular grooves; first and second O-rings sized to fit the two grooves on the main ring; and cloth for forming a sewing ring, mounted by first surrounding the ring, then by having the cloth held to the ring by mounting the first and second O-rings over the cloth, and the cloth being sewn in place around the O-rings on the outer surface of the ring.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 100 words
A prosthetic heart valve comprising: a sewing ring having a main ring forming a central bore, the ring having an inner surface towards the central bore and an outer surface, the outer surface including two annular grooves; first and second O-rings sized to fit the two grooves on the main ring; and cloth for forming a sewing ring, mounted by first surrounding the ring, then by having the cloth held to the ring by mounting the first and second O-rings over the cloth, and the cloth being sewn in place around the O-rings on the outer surface of the ring.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 100 words
A sewing ring for a prosthetic heart valve comprising: a ring forming a central bore, the ring having an inner surface towards the central bore and an outer surface, the outer surface including first and second annular grooves; first and second O-rings sized to fit the two grooves on the ring; and cloth for forming a sewing ring, mounted by first surrounding the ring, then by having the cloth held to the ring by mounting the O-rings over the cloth in the grooves, and the cloth being sewn in place around the O-rings on the outer surface of the ring.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 100 words
A sewing ring for a prosthetic heart valve comprising: a ring forming a central bore, the ring having an inner surface towards the central bore and an outer surface, the outer surface including first and second annular grooves; first and second O-rings sized to fit the two grooves on the ring; and cloth for forming a sewing ring, mounted by first surrounding the ring, then by having the cloth held to the ring by mounting the O-rings over the cloth in the grooves, and the cloth being sewn in place around the O-rings on the outer surface of the ring.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 107 words
A method of making a sewing ring for a prosthetic heart valve: providing a generally cylindrical main ring having an inner surface forming a central bore therethrough, and an outer surface having first and second annular grooves; mounting cloth over the ring so that it contacts the outer surface; mounting a first O-ring over the cloth onto the first groove in the ring, securing the cloth to the main ring; mounting a second O-ring over the cloth in the second groove, securing the cloth to the main ring; and folding the cloth over each O-ring and suturing the cloth to retain the O-rings on the main ring.
