Abstract

Abstract A catheter grip (1) comprises a pair of members (2,3) which can be folded about a hinge (4) and pressed lightly together with one hand to hold a catheter (20) firmly, but without damage, in a passage (15) formed by grooves (9,10) in the members and projecting portions (5,6) thereof which form a tapered spigot (13) through which the catheter extends. The grip facilitates insertion of a catheter (20) into a vein (22) through a peel sheath (21) and the subsequent removal of the sheath, for which purpose the catheter is held steady by the grip with the tip (14) of the spigot (13) forming a seal in the lumen of the sheath (21) while it is withdrawn over the spigot (13) and thereby split longitudinally along its length.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 124 words
A catheter grip (1) for use in a method of inserting a catheter (20) employing a peel sheath (2l), the grip comprising a pair of members (2,3) which can be closed together to bracket the catheter and can be held by one hand so that the catheter is held firmly between the members but without damaging the catheter, each member (2,3) having a portion (5,6) for co-operating with a portion of the other member to form a spigot (13) of which at least the tip (14) will fit closely around the catheter (20) and within the peel sheath (21) to form a seal between the catheter and the sheath in front of the advancing split (25) as the sheath is withdrawn and split apart.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 124 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
A catheter grip according to claim 1, in which the spigot forming portions (5,6) of the members (2,3) are shaped so that they co-operate, when the members are closed together, to form a spigot (13) which is externally tapered towards its tip (14).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
A catheter grip according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which each of the members (2,3) has a groove (9,10) for receiving the catheter (20) when the members are closed together, each groove (9,10) having a substantially semi-circular cross-sectional profile and extending through the spigot forming portion (5,6) of the member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
A catheter grip according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the members (2,3) are connected together by a hinge (4) about which the members are folded to the closed position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A catheter grip according to claim 4, in which the members (2,3) and the hinge (4) are formed integrally as a single plastics moulding.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 43 words
A catheter grip according to claim 4 or claim 5, when dependent on claim 3, in which the groove (9,10) of each member (2,3) is located very much closer to the hinge (4) than to the opposite free edge (16,17) of the member.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
A catheter grip according to claim 6, in which the groove (9,10) of each member (2,3) is parallel to the hinge (4).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
A catheter grip according to any one of claims 4 to 7, in which the members (2,3) are symmetrical about the hinge (4).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 46 words
A catheter grip according to any one of claims 1 to 7, in which at least one of the members (2,3) has a locating (26) pin arranged to fit in a corresponding hole (27) in the other member when the members (2,3) are correctly closed together.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 52 words
A catheter insertion pack containing a hollow needle, a Seldinger wire insertable through the needle, a vessel dilator insertable over the wire, a peel sheath (21) insertable over the vessel dilator, a catheter (20) insertable through the peel sheath, and a catheter grip (1) according to any one of the preceding claims.
