Abstract

Abstract A device for protecting the needle of a syringe to keep it sterile before use and to prevent it from accidental pricks after use consists of a rigid protection housing (6, 6A) connected by an elastic member (7) to the syringe cylinder (1) at the opposite end apart from the needle. Protection housing (6, 6A) enclosing the syringe is shorter than the latter. When the elastic member is in its rest position, needle (5) is completely enclosed in the protection housing; when the elastic member is manually contracted, protection housing slides along the syringe cylinder, thus allowing the needle to be extracted. Several embodiments of a safety lock means are provided to prevent the needle to be accidentally extracted from the protection housing.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 169 words
Device for protecting the needle of a syringe before and after the use thereof, characterized by: - a protection housing coaxial with the syringe and comprising a rigid tubular portion provided with cap (13, 13A) which encloses needle (5), joint portion (4) of the needle and a portion of syringe cylinder (1), and can slide along the syringe, thus allowing the needle to be completely extracted, said rigid tubular portion being provided with two opposite slots (11) allowing cylinder (1) of the syringe to be suitably handled; - an elastic means connecting the protection housing at its end (9) opposed to the needle with cylinder (1) at the free end of plunger rod (2) of the syringe, said elastic means being able to perform its elastic action in the longitudinal direction of the syringe axis in order to cause protection housing to slide along the syringe; and - a safety lock means adapted to prevent the elastic means to be accidentally operated and the needle to be unintentionally extracted.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 169 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
The device of claim 1, characterized in that said protection housing (6) is cylindrical and has an inside diameter somewhat larger than that of both the joint portion of the needle and the syringe cylinder.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
The device of claim 1, characterized in that said protection housing (6A) is a cylinder having constant diameter.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 81 words
The device of claim 1, characterized in that said elastic means consists of an elastic ring (7) of plastic material provided with two coaxially bored diametrally opposed expansions (7a, 7b), each of them has a hole with a larger diameter than the syringe cylinder, one of said expansion being integral with end (9) of the protection housing opposed to the needle, the other expansion being integral with nut (8) connected to syringe cylinder (1) at the end of plunger rod (2).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 35 words
The device of claims 1, 2 and 4, characterized in that the safety lock means is a moving projection (10) generally parallel to the syringe cylinder and opposing the contraction of said elastic ring (7).
Claim 7
Independent Claim 71 words
The device of claims 1, 2 and 4, characterized in that the safety lock means is a resilient tongue (12) sloped to the interior of the protection housing and abuting against the forward end of the syringe cylinder, said tongue being also provided with a grip member (12a) projecting outwards through an opening of the protection housing, the operation of which allows the protection housing to slide along the syringe cylinder.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 88 words
The device of claims 1, 3 and 4, characterized in that said protection housing is cut to form two tongues (15, 15) diametrally opposed to each other and resiliently bent to the interior of the protection housing and against a removable hollow plug (13A) surrounding joint portion (4) of the needle and needle (5) itself, said plug (13A) being removed in order to allow tongues (15, 15) to engage the end of the syringe cylinder, thus preventing the needle to be extracted after the use of the syringe.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 24 words
A device according to any of the preceeding claims, wherein the outer surface of cylinder (1) is rough at the grip portion (14) thereof.
