Abstract

Abstract A forensic sample and tracking system includes a computer system (11) which operates a data base (25) and a read/write station (15). The assignment of an identifier in the data base (15) and an identification code to be printed on a sample bottle label (51) are coordinated by the computer (11). An identification code can then be read for verification after it is written. This permits automated verifying of identification codes in a heretofore unavailable manner. The read/write station (15) makes use of an inexpensive, reliable and compact thermal ink jet print head (39) so that a field computer (26) and read/write station (21) can be taken to sample collection sites. The effective linear resolution of the identification code is enhanced using a two-track bar code.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 72 words
An apparatus characterised in that it includes printing means for printing on a label (51) stuck on an object sensing means (41), to read printing on a label (51) stuck on an object; data transfer means (31) to transfer data to the printing means and from the sensing means (41); and handling means (45,47,49) to handle an object so that a lable (51), stuck to it, may be read or written upon.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 72 words
An apparatus characterised in that it includes printing means for printing on a label (51) stuck on an object sensing means (41), to read printing on a label (51) stuck on an object; data transfer means (31) to transfer data to the printing means and from the sensing means (41); and handling means (45,47,49) to handle an object so that a lable (51), stuck to it, may be read or written upon.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein all of the objects are bottles (37).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
The apparatus of claim 1 or 2 wherein the handling means (45,47, 49) rotates the object relative to the printing means.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 15 words
The apparatus of any preceding claim wherein the printing means includes a print head (39).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 41 words
The apparatus in any preceding claim further including verification means wherein the sensing means (41) check that the printing means has printed the label (51) in accordance with the data transferred to the printing means by the data transfer means (31).
Claim 7
Independent Claim 32 words
The apparatus in any of claims 3 to 5 wherein the printing means prints a parallel track bar code on the label (51) in a single rotation cycle of the bottle (37).
Claim 8
Independent Claim 31 words
The apparatus of any preceding claim wherein the sensing means (41) includes means for detecting the ends of the label (51) so that the printing is printed on the label (51).
Claim 9
Independent Claim 62 words
The apparatus of any of claims 2 to 7 wherein there are further provided transfer means to transfer at least part of a first sample in a first bottle into a second bottle to form a second sample, the second bottle being marked with a printed label (51) that includes printing showing the relationship of the second sample to the first sample.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
The apparatus according to claim 8 further comprising analytical means (13) for subjecting at least part of the first sample to analytical procedures.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 127 words
A system characterised in that it comprises a write station (15); and computer means (11) for receiving processing, storing and transmitting data and commands, the computer means (11) including data base means (25) for storing a descriptive sample data in association with a sample identifier referable to a sample in a sample container (37), access means (31) for sending data to be encoded and written by the write station, and processor means (23) coupled to the data base means (25) and the access means (31) for causing data referable to the sample identifier to be sent via the access means (31) to the write station (15) so that the write station (15) writes a sample identification code referable to the sample identifier on the sample container (37).
