Abstract

Abstract A catheter assembly (10) especially designed for the performance of atherectomy procedures which includes a guide catheter (12) having an inflation balloon (20) disposed on the distal end portion thereof, the guide catheter being dimensioned to receive in its lumen an elongated drive tube (16) having an annular cutting tip (22) affixed to the distal end thereof. A rotational drive mechanism is coupled to the drive tube at its proximal end for rotating same. Provision (48, 49, 50) is also made in the drive mechanism for introducing fluid through the lumen of the guide catheter for inflating its balloon and for drawing a vacuum on the lumen of the drive tube for aspirating the treatment site.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 271 words
An atherectomy catheter assembly (10) including a first, flexible tubular member (12) of a predetermined outside and inside diameter having a proximal end and a distal end (16); and an inflatable expander member (20) attached to said distal end of said first tubular member to be inflated by fluid passing through the lumen of said first tubular member, characterized by, a second tubular member (16) having an outer diameter less than said predetermined inside diameter of said first tubular member and a proximal end and a distal end, said second tubular member being coaxially disposed within the lumen of said first tubular member with a predetermined clearance between said outer diameter of said second tubular member and said inside diameter of said first tubular member, allowing rotation and axial displacement of said second tubular member relative to said first tubular member; an annular cutter (22) attached to said distal end of said second tubular member; motor means coupled to said proximal end of said second tubular member for imparting rotation thereto; means (48, 49, 50) coupled to said proximal end of said first tubular member for directing fluid through the lumen thereof to inflate and deflate said expander member (20); means (44, 42) for applying a negative pressure to the lumen of said second tubular member at the proximal end portion thereof; and means (54, 30, 32) located at said proximal end of said second tubular member for axially extending and retracting said distal end of said second tubular member from said distal end of said first tubular member as said second tubular member is being rotated by said motor means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 271 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The atherectomy catheter assembly as in Claim 1 in which said annular cutter (22) is serrated (62) on a working edge thereof.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 38 words
The atherectomy catheter assembly as in Claim 2 wherein the serrations (62) only effectively engage a surface for cutting when said surface is at least a predetermined minimum angle (66) to the longitudinal axis of said annular cutter.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 48 words
The atherectomy catheter assembly as in Claim 1 and further characterized by an intermediate tubular member (14) coaxially disposed relative to said first (12) and second (16) tubular members and arranged such that the inflation fluid passes through the space between said first and said intermediate tubular members.
