Abstract

Abstract Steerable low profile dilatation catheter (11) having a flexible elongate tubular member (12) with proximal and distal extremities and with a flow passage (13) extending therethrough. An adapter (18) is secured to the proximal extremity of the tubular member (12). A separate balloon (26) having proximal and distal extremities is provided. The balloon has its proximal extremity mounted on the distal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member (12). A core wire (31) extends through the flow passage (13) of the tubular member and through the balloon (26) and beyond the distal extremity of the balloon (26). A tip coil (41) is provided which is formed of a radiopaque material and has proximal and distal extremities. The proximal extremity of the tip coil (41) is secured to the distal extremity of the balloon (26). The distal extremity of the core wire (31) extends into the tip coil (41) but is spaced from the distal extremity of the tip coil (41).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 146 words
In a steerable low profile dilatation catheter, a flexible elongate tubular member having proximal and distal extremities and having a flow passage extending therethrough, an adapter secured to the proximal extremity of the tubular member, a separate balloon member having proximal and distal extremities and having its proximal extremity mounted on the distal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member to provide a liquid-tight seal between the same, a core wire extending through the flow passage of the tubular member and through the balloon and beyond the distal extremity of the balloon, a tip coil formed of a radiopaque material having proximal and distal extremities and means securing the proximal extremity of the tip coil to the distal extremity of the balloon member, the distal extremity of the core wire extending into the tip coil, but being spaced from the distal extremity of the tip coil.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 146 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A dilatation catheter as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said core wire is provided with a tapered distal extremity.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 84 words
A dilatation catheter as claimed in Claim 2 wherein said core wire is provided with a proximal portion having a continuous diameter of approximately 0.4 mm (.016 inch) for a substantial portion of the same and wherein the portion of the guide wire extending into the balloon has a tapered portion reducing the diameter from approximately 0.4 mm (.016 inch) to approximately 0.2 nm (.008 inch), a taper portion reducing the diameter from approximately 0.2 mm (.008 inch) to approximately 0.1 mm (.005 inch).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
A dilatation catheter as claimed in Claims 2 or 3 wherein the distal extremity of the core wire is provided with a flattened end portion.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A dilatation catheter as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the flattened end portion extends into the tip coil.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 43 words
A dilatation catheter as claimed in any one of Claims 1-5 together with a shaping ribbon, means securing the shaping ribbon to the distal extremity of the core wire and means securing the shaping ribbon to the distal extremity of the tip coil.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
A dilatation catheter as claimed in any one of Claims 1-6 wherein the balloon member has a wall thickness which is substantially less than the wall thickness of the tubular member.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 39 words
A dilatation catheter as claimed in any one of Claims 1-7 wherein said tubular member has a wall thickness of approximately 0.1 mm (.005 inch) and the balloon member has a wall thickness of approximately 0.025 mm (.001 inch).
