Abstract
Abstract An intramedullary nail comprises a tubular body (1) having a hexagonal cross section and is curved along its length from a proximal end to a distal end, with a frustoconically tapering portion (3) at the distal end. Adjacent the distal end portion (3) are a plurality of holes (6) and adjacent the proximal end are a plurality of slots (7) for receiving fixing screws or locking pins. A specific apparatus for use in insertion of the nail into the bone and for locating the holes in its ends is also disclosed.

An intramedullary nail, characterised in that it comprises a tubular body (1) of hexagonal cross section having a distal end and a proximal end, being curved along its length, and having a frustoconical taper (3) at the distal end.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
39 words
An intramedullary nail, characterised in that it comprises a tubular body (1) of hexagonal cross section having a distal end and a proximal end, being curved along its length, and having a frustoconical taper (3) at the distal end.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
40 words
An intramedullary nail according to Claim 1, characterised in that the side wall of the tubular body (1) has at least one hole (6) therein adjacent the distal end and at least one slot (7) adjacent the proximal end thereof.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
40 words
3 An intramedullary nail according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterised in that the tubular body (1) has a longitudinal slot (5) the effect of which is to modify the flexural elasticity of the body (1) in one plane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
32 words
4 An intramedullary nail according to Claim 3, characterised in that the said longitudinal slot (5) is formed in correspondence with one corner of the hexagonal cross section of the body (1).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
80 words
Apparatus for use in fixing the intramedullary nail according to any preceding Claim to a bone, characterised in that it comprises a guide bracket (3), means (20) for locating the guide bracket at the proximal end of the tubular body (1), of the intramedullary nail after this has been inserted into a bone, and guide bushes (31,32) having confluent directions, in positions coresponding to those of the proximal slots (7) in the body (1), carried by the guide bracket (30).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
48 words
Apparatus according to Claim 5, characterised in that it includes a beater (20) for the said tubular body (1) having a handle provided (21) with a threaded terminal portion for the application of a guide body for use in introducing the tubular body (1) into a modullary canal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
85 words
Apparatus according to Claim 5 or Claim 6, characterised in that it includes a position indicator probe introduceable into the tubular body (1) and having an external guide casing of hexagonal cross section matching the interior of the tubular body (1) of the nail, this guide casing containing electronic micro-circuits operable to generate a magnetic field detectable by an external magnet or the purpose of establishing the position of the holes (6) at the distal end of the tubular body (1) into the distal holes.
