Abstract

Abstract An injection device which is devised to be safer in use than many prior such devices comprises a generally cylindrical barrel section (4, 42) which is substantially closed at its first end but has an aperture (6, 43) in that end to allow an injection needle (9, 41) to pass through it, a needle support member (10, 40, 60) to slide within the barrel section and shaped to receive one end of a liquid container such as an ampoule (12, 52, 61) of anaesthetic, and a plunger (7, 45, 62) mounted at the other end of the barrel section for axial movement in said section. The plunger is adapted both to express liquid from the liquid container when the plunger is advanced within the barrel and also to interconnect with either the needle support member of the liquid container, whereby withdrawal of the plunger withdraws both the liquid container and also the needle and its support member into the barrel section for disposal.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 213 words
An injection device, characterised in that it comprises a generally cylindrical barrel section (4, 42), substantially closed at a first end thereof but having an aperture (6, 43) in said closed end to permit passage of an injection needle (9, 41) therethrough, a needle support member (10, 40, 60) carrying an injection needle (9, 41) and of such dimensions as to fit within the barrel section (4, 42) for sliding movement axially therein between a forward position in which said needle (9, 41) extends through said aperture (6, 43) and a rearward position in which said needle (9, 41) lies wholly within said barrel section (4, 42), said needle support member (10, 40, 60) further being shaped to receive one end of a liquid container (12, 52, 61) also within said barrel section, and a plunger (7, 45, 62), mounted at the second end of said barrel section (4, 42) for axial movement therein and adapted by forward said movement to express liquid from a said container (12, 52, 61) and to interconnect with either the needle support member (10, 40, 60) or a said liquid container (12, 52, 61) such that subsequent rearward movement of said plunger (7, 45, 62) withdraws the needle support member (10, 40, 60) into its rearward position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 213 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
An injection device according to claim 1, characterised in that said needle support member is a short, generally cylindrical plug (10, 40, 60), of slightly smaller radial diameter than the internal diameter of said barrel section and adapted to receive a needle (9, 41) axially therethrough.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
An injection device according to either of the preceding claims, characterised in that said needle support member (10, 40, 60) incorporates connector means (11) adapted to engage a said liquid container.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
An injection device according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that said plunger (7, 45, 62) is mounted in a cap (5, 46, 67) designed for removable attachment to said barrel section (4, 42).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 64 words
An injection device according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that said needle support member (40, 60) comprises one or more elongated extensions (40 c , 60 a ), adapted to extend beyond the length of a said liquid container (52, 61) and to resiliently engage in one or more projections (51, 64 b ) extending laterally from said plunger (45, 62).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 42 words
An injection device according to any of the preceding claims, characterised by means (54, 63 a ) to disengage said elongated extensions (40 c , 60 a ) from said projections (51, 64 b ) when said plunger (45, 62) is withdrawn.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 50 words
An injection device according to any of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that said plunger (7) carries, at or adjacent to an end thereof which is designed to enter a said liquid container, a plug (19) which is radially expandable to engage the inner surface of said container (12).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 42 words
An injection device according to claim 7, characterised in that said plunger (7) is formed in two coaxial sections (15, 16) and said radial expansion of said plug (19) is effected by relative axial movement of said two coaxial sections (15, 16).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 39 words
An injection device according to any of the preceding claims, characterised by locking means to retain a said liquid container (12, 52) and said needle (9, 41) in said rearward position within said barrel section (4, 42) after use.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 44 words
An injection device according to claim 9, characterised in that said locking means comprises a radial projection (22, 40 f ) from said needle support member (10, 40) and a corresponding detent (23, 55) in the inner face of said barrel section (4, 42).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 30 words
