Claim 1
Independent Claim
172 words
An implantable support for a natural heart valve, said support (11) being generally ring shaped and having a size and shape to fit against the natural heart valve annulus, said ring shaped support (11) having a perimeter of fixed length, characterised in that said support (11) comprises a first elongate section (13) of lesser flexibility and a second section (33) of greater flexibility extending between the ends (21) of the first section (13), the second section (33) comprising an integral and unbroken cord (15) encased in a soft compressible material (19), the soft compressible material (19) supporting the cord so that the first and second sections (13,33) together define a first configuration in an unstressed condition of the support (11) while allying the support (11) to adopt other configurations on the application of stress thereto, whereby, when said support (11) is implanted, the support limits dialation of the heart valve annulus while the flexibility of the second section (33) of the support (11) allows substantially normal contraction of the heart valve annulus.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
20 words
A support according to claim 1 wherein at least a portion (25) of the first section (13) is substantially rigid.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
19 words
A support according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said first section (13) includes a metal frame member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
43 words
A support according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said first section (13) comprises a substantially rigid portion and, extending from said rigid portion (25), end portions (23)that increase in flexibility as they extend away from the rigid portion (25).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
35 words
A support according to claim 4 wherein the substantially rigid portion (25) is substantially straight and the portions (23) of increasing flexibility are curved in the same general direction away from the straight section (25).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
30 words
A support according to anyone of claims 1 to 5 wherein the soft compressible material (19) encases both the cord (15) and the first section (13) of the support (11).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
25 words
A support according to anyone of claims 1 to 6 including a flexible sheath (17) at least partly enclosing the first and second sections (13,33).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
20 words
A support as claimed in claim 7 wherein said flexible sheath (17) is filled with the soft compressible material (19).
