Abstract
Abstract A heart assist device for insertion into the thoracic cavity of a patient comprises a double-walled jacket (10) adapted to enclose at least the ventricular portion of the heart (H), at least the inner wall (11) of the jacket being pliable to be able to engage the outer surface of the heart and move together with the walls of the heart, and the interspace (13) between the inner and outer walls of the jacket being closed and filled with a fluid which is easily displaceable within the interspace.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
100 words
Heart assist device for insertion into the thoracic cavity of a patient and comprising a jacket for enclosing and engaging at least the ventricular portion of the patient's heart, characterised in that the jacket (10,10a) has relatively movable inner and outer walls (11,12) defining between them a closed interspace (13,13a) holding a fluid which is displaceable within the interspace in response to relative movements of the inner and outer walls and in that at least the inner wall (11) is pliable so that it can fit snugly around the heart (H) and move together with the heart wall it engages.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
20 words
Device according to claim 1, characterised in that the jacket (10a) is adapted to enclose substantially the entire heart (H).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
32 words
3 Device according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the jacket (10a) comprises at least two parts (10a1,10a2) which are adapted to jointly form a capsule around the heart (H).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
35 words
Device according to claim 3, characterised in that the interspace (13a) between the walls of each part (10a1,10a2) is closed but communicates with the interspace of the other part or each of the other parts.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
32 words
Device according to any one of claims 1-4, characterised in that the interspace (13,13a) between the walls (11,12) of the jacket (10,10a) is in fluid flow communication with an expansion vessel (15).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
17 words
Device according to claim 5, characterised in that the volume of the expansion vessel (15) is variable.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
20 words
Device according to any one of claims 1-6, characterised in that at least a portion of the fluid is compressible.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
54 words
Device according to any one of claims 1-7, characterised by a flexible conduit (14) one end of which is connected with the jacket (10a) and the other end of which is provided with an implantable terminal device (20) having self-sealing means (21) through which fluid may be supplied to and removed from the jacket.
