Apparatus for placement of, and in combination with, a soft pliable catheter, such apparatus comprising a magnetically responsive means (120) on the catheter (12), a placement device (122) which is relatively more rigid than the catheter (12) and which includes an electromagnet (124) selectively energisable in cooperative association with the magnetically responsive means (120) on the catheter (12) for guiding the catheter (12) to a desired location within an organ, the electromagnet (124) being effective, when energised, to attract the magnetic responsive means (120) and when deenergised to release the magnetic responsive means (120), whereby the placement device (122) can be used to draw the catheter (12) into the organ.

Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the catheter has a closed cylindrical walled chamber (26) on a tube (16) for disposition against the lumen of the organ, said tube having an entrance (34) to and an exit (36) from said chamber, the wall (20) of said chamber comprising a material which is freely permeable to gas but poorly permeable to liquid, and an oxygen perfusion source (14) connectable to the tube (16).

Apparatus according to claim 4, which also includes an aspirating fluid source (104), and means (106) for selectively connecting said oxygen perfusion source (14) and said aspirating fluid source (104) to said catheter so that when the oxygen perfusion source is connected to the catheter, oxygenation of the organ can be performed, and when the aspirating fluid source is connected to the catheter aspirating fluid can be introduced to obtain a sample of CO₂ gas from the lumen of the organ.

Apparatus according to any preceding claim, which comprises a soft pliable tube (12) for introduction into the gastrointestinal tract, a walled sampling chamber (26) on the tube comprising a wall (20) of material which is freely permeable to gas but poorly permeable to liquids, the sampling chamber being in communication with said tube so that fluid can be introduced into said chamber via said tube, and a separate lumen (178) through the catheter for guiding of the catheter (170) on a guidewire (174).
