Claim 1
Independent Claim
159 words
A prosthetic heart valve comprising a stent (12) having an annular base (19) and a plurality of legs (15, 16, 17) extending upwardly from said base and a valve element circumscribing said stent and attached thereto, said valve element comprising a number of cooperating valve leaflets (11) equal to the number of said legs said stent being covered with a layer (21, 22) of biologically-compatible material secured to said stent and positioned between said stent and said leaflets, and covering all of the surfaces of said stent that, in the absence of said layer, would contact the mobile portions of said leaflets during the normal function of the valve, including the whole of the upper surface of the stent, characterised in that said layer (21, 22) of biologically-compatible material is not of fabric or cloth, and has a smooth, non-abrasive outer surface, for the purpose of avoiding abrasion damage caused by the rubbing of the leaflets over the stent.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
34 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to claim 1, characterised in that said layer (21) is a sheet of a synthetic polymeric material, a coating of synthetic polymeric material or a sheet of natural tissue.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to claim 2, characterised in -that said synthetic polymeric material is polyurethane, a silicone elastomer or polytetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
34 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to claim 2, characterised in that said natural tissue is pericardial tissue which is cross-linked by fixation of the tissue before or after its attachment to the stent (12).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
45 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that it comprises additionally a layer of fabric (21') covering the entire surface of and attached to said stent, and positioned between said stent and said layer of biologically-compatible material (22).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
32 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to claim 5, characterised in that the biologically-compatible material (22) is attached to the fabric (21') by means of a biologically-compatible glue or by means of sutures.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
28 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to claim 5, characterised in that said layer of biologically-compatible material (22) is a coating of organic material applied to the fabric (21').
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
24 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to claim 7, characterised in that the organic material is collagen or gelatin which may be uncross-linked or cross-linked.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
31 words
A prosthetic heart valve according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the biologically-compatible material has a greater compliance than the material from which the stent is made.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
89 words
A stent (12) for use in a prosthetic heart valve comprising an annular base (19) and a plurality of legs (15, 16, 17) extending upwardly from said base, characterised in that a layer of biologically-compatible material (21) which is not of fabric or cloth is secured to and covers all the surfaces thereof, the said layer having a smooth, non-abrasive outer surface, the said outer surface being that which contacts the mobile portions of the leaflets in the heart valve for which the stent is adapted to be used.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
89 words
A stent (12) for use in a prosthetic heart valve comprising an annular base (19) and a plurality of legs (15, 16, 17) extending upwardly from said base, characterised in that a layer of biologically-compatible material (21) which is not of fabric or cloth is secured to and covers all the surfaces thereof, the said layer having a smooth, non-abrasive outer surface, the said outer surface being that which contacts the mobile portions of the leaflets in the heart valve for which the stent is adapted to be used.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
97 words
A stent (12) for use in a prosthetic heart valve comprising an annular base (19) and a plurality of legs (15, 16, 17) extending upwardly from said base and a layer of fabric material (21') secured to and covering all the surfaces thereof, characterised in that all of the surfaces of said stent which would contact the mobile portions of the leaflets in the heart valve for which the stent is adapted to be used, are covered with a layer of biologically-compatible material (22), which is not of fabric or cloth, having a smooth, non-abrasive outer surface.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
97 words
A stent (12) for use in a prosthetic heart valve comprising an annular base (19) and a plurality of legs (15, 16, 17) extending upwardly from said base and a layer of fabric material (21') secured to and covering all the surfaces thereof, characterised in that all of the surfaces of said stent which would contact the mobile portions of the leaflets in the heart valve for which the stent is adapted to be used, are covered with a layer of biologically-compatible material (22), which is not of fabric or cloth, having a smooth, non-abrasive outer surface.
