Abstract
Abstract A bone staple (1), for attaching tubular shaped soft tissue to bone, in which the transverse bridge (3) of the staple (1) has teeth (5) on its underside to grip the tissue and is arch (3) shaped so that the center of the bridge (3) is above the bone surface when the staple legs (2) are driven fully into a bone.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
127 words
A surgical bone staple (1) comprising, a bridge member (3) joined at each end to a pointed leg, the legs (2) pointing in the same general direction and being approximately coplanar with said bridge member (3), a plurality of pointed teeth (5) depending from said concave surface (4) and generally parallel to said legs (2), said teeth (5) being substantially shorter than said legs (2), and characterized in that the bridge member (3) is in the form of an arch having its concave surface (4) facing said legs (2), said arch having a rise of about 20% to about 50% of its span, whereby the center of said. concave surface (4) remains substantially above a bone surface when said legs (2) are driven fully into said bone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
33 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 1 characterized in that the points (8) of the teeth (5) lie essentially in a plane perpendicular to the legs (2) at their upper ends.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
31 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 2 characterized in that the teeth (5) are arranged in two rows extending along the concave surface (4) of the bridge member (3).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
26 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 3 characterized in that the teeth (5) in one row are offset from those in the other row.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
49 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 4 characterized in that the teeth (5) have cross sections in the form of parallelograms with a first pair of sides parallel to the plane of said bridge member (3) and a second pair of sides oblique to said first sides.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
37 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 2 characterized in that the outer surface of the bridge member (3) has a flattened section forming an impact head (9) for driving the staple (1) into a bone.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
25 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 2 characterized in that the legs (2) are tapered from their upper to their lower ends (7).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
31 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in-claim 7 characterized in that the legs (2) are serrated with the serration points (8) directed away from the lower ends (7) of the legs.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
31 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 6 characterized in that the rise of the arch in the bridge member (3) is about 28% of the span of the staple.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
37 words
A surgical bone staple (1) as in claim 1 characterized in that said bridge member (3) is joined at each end to a second pointed leg, all legs (2) being of the same general form and orientation.
