Abstract

Abstract A process for tying live tissue and an instrument used in performing the tying operation. The tie is of the type comprising a toothed strap having an apertured head at one end, the other end of the strap being threaded through the head and locked therein by a pawl. The instrument comprises an extension having a fork-like construction for holding the head of the looped tie, a rod adapted to be moved relative to the extension and having a buckle-like construction for holding the free end of the strap, and a handle for effecting the movement of the rod relative to the extension whereby the strap is pulled through the head of the tie so as to tighten the loop around the live tissue.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 113 words
An instrument for ligating live tissue with a tie; the tie of the type comprising a toothed strap having an apertured head at one end, the other end of the strap being threaded through the head and locked therein by a pawl to form a loop; the instrument comprising an extension having means for holding the head of the looped tie, a rod adapted to be moved relative to the extension and having means for holding the free end of the strap, and handle means for effecting the movement of the rod relative to the extension whereby the strap is pulled through the head of the tie so as to tighten the loop.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 113 words
An instrument for ligating live tissue with a tie; the tie of the type comprising a toothed strap having an apertured head at one end, the other end of the strap being threaded through the head and locked therein by a pawl to form a loop; the instrument comprising an extension having means for holding the head of the looped tie, a rod adapted to be moved relative to the extension and having means for holding the free end of the strap, and handle means for effecting the movement of the rod relative to the extension whereby the strap is pulled through the head of the tie so as to tighten the loop.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
An instrument as claimed in claim 1 wherein the extension is secured to one end of a holder.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
An instrument as claimed in claim 2 wherein the extension is adjustably secured to one end of the holder.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
An instrument as claimed in claimed 2 wherein the rod is adjustably secured to a slide which is free to undergo translational movement with respect to the holder.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
An instrument as claimed in claim 4 wherein the slide is provided with at least two ring grips.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
An instrument as claimed in claim 1 wherein the extension comprises a sleeve having an open channel.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 33 words
An instrument as claimed in claim 7 wherein the rod is adapted to be moved inside the sleeve and the means for holding the free end of the tie slides within the channel.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
An instrument as claimed in claim 8 wherein the means for holding the free end of the tie extends beyond the sleeve.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 86 words
A process for ligating live tissue comprising the following steps: forming a loop in a tie of the type comprising a toothed strap having an apertured head at one end, the loop being formed by threading the other end of the strap through the head, the strap being locked therein by a pawl; placing the loop around the live tissue; and pulling the free end of the tie whereby the strap is pulled through the head so as to tighten the loop around the live tissue.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 86 words
A process for ligating live tissue comprising the following steps: forming a loop in a tie of the type comprising a toothed strap having an apertured head at one end, the loop being formed by threading the other end of the strap through the head, the strap being locked therein by a pawl; placing the loop around the live tissue; and pulling the free end of the tie whereby the strap is pulled through the head so as to tighten the loop around the live tissue.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 77 words
A process of ligating live tissue comprising the following steps: forming a loop in a tie of the type comprising a toothed strap having an apertured head at one end, the loop being formed by threading the other'end of the strap through the head, the strap being locked therein by a pawl; placing the loop around the live tissue; and using the instrument claimed in claim 1 so as to tighten the loop around the live tissue.
