Abstract

Abstract A flexible tip catheter for electrically stimulating the heart comprising an elongated body having an elongated passage therein and an elongated conductor partially in the passage. The elongated conductor has a distal end portion outside of the passage which is flexible and resilient along its length. The distal end portion includes a flexible resilient electrode exposed at the outer periphery of the catheter so that current can be passed along the conductor to the electrode to electrically stimulate the heart. The flexibility of the distal end portion and of the electrode greatly reduces the risk of penetration of the heart wall.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 93 words
A flexible tip catheter for electrically stimulating the heart comprising: an elongated body having an elongated passage therein; an elongated conductor partially in said passage, said elongated conductor having a distal end portion outside of said passage which is flexible and resilient along its length, said distal end portion terminating substantially at a distal end of the catheter; and said flexible resilient distal end portion including a flexible electrode exposed at the outer periphery of the catheter whereby current can be passed along the conductor to said electrode to electrically stimulate the heart.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 93 words
A flexible tip catheter for electrically stimulating the heart comprising: an elongated body having an elongated passage therein; an elongated conductor partially in said passage, said elongated conductor having a distal end portion outside of said passage which is flexible and resilient along its length, said distal end portion terminating substantially at a distal end of the catheter; and said flexible resilient distal end portion including a flexible electrode exposed at the outer periphery of the catheter whereby current can be passed along the conductor to said electrode to electrically stimulate the heart.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
A catheter as defined in claim 1 wherein said distal end portion of said conductor includes a flexible resilient coil spring which extends to the distal end of the catheter.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 59 words
A catheter as defined in claims 1 or 2 wherein said conductor includes a first section lying at least partially within said body, a distal section and a transition section joining said first section to said distal section, said distal section is more flexible than said transition section, and said transition section is more flexible than said first section.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 89 words
A catheter as defined in claim 1 wherein said conductor includes an elongated wire, a distal section of said wire being wound into a coil and being flexible and resilient, a transition section of said conductor being wound into a coil with the coils of the transition section being spaced greater axially than the spacing between the coils of the distal section, and a first section of said wire lying at least partially within said passage of said body, said first section being less flexible than said transition section.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
A catheter as defined in claim 4 wherein the wire of said first section has a greater cross-sectional area than the wire of said transition section and the wire of said transition section has a larger cross-sectional area than the wire of said distal section.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 36 words
A catheter as defined in claims 1 or 4 wherein said body includes a conductive wire having a plurality of coils with a region of said last mentioned coils being exposed to define a second electrode.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 39 words
A catheter as defined in claim 6 wherein the coils adjacent the distal end of said wire of the body are spaced apart axially and said catheter includes an elastomer within said spaced coils and between said spaced coils.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 33 words
A catheter as defined in claim 1 wherein said distal end portion includes a wire having a plurality of coils and said catheter includes an elastomer within at least some of said coils.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A catheter as defined in claim 1 wherein said distal end portion of said conductor includes a body of conductive elastomeric material at least partially defining the flexible resilient electrode.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 167 words
10 . An apparatus comprising: a guiding catheter adapted to be passed through the right side of the heart into the pulmonary artery; said guiding catheter including an elongated catheter body having proximal and distal ends, at least one lumen extending longitudinally in the body and a port extending from the lumen to the exterior of the catheter body, said port being in the right heart when the catheter extends through the right heart to the pulmonary artery; said guiding catheter including an elongated stiffening element permanently fixed within the catheter body and extending from a location on the proximal side of said port to a location on the distal side of said port, said stiffening element being flexible but sufficiently stiff to cause the catheter to be gently curved without forming a kink when the catheter extends through the right heart to the pulmonary artery; and said lumen being adapted to have an inner catheter passed through the lumen and the port into the right heart.
Claim 12
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 32 words
The apparatus as defined in claim 10. including an inner catheter extending through said lumen and passing through said port, said inner catheter including a pacing catheter having at least one electrode.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 56 words
An apparatus as defined in claim 10 or 11 wherein said stiffening element extends no farther proximally than the superior vena cava when the guiding catheter extends through the right heart to the pulmonary artery and no farther distally than the right ventricle when the guiding catheter extends through the right heart to the pulmonary artery.
