Abstract

Abstract A system for use in the treatment of paralyzed muscles is disclosed. The system makes use of a set of transcutaneous electrodes (15a, 15b, 15c) which are placed upon the skin of the subject over muscles which are to be stimulated. A computer controlled stimulator (50) generates a pair of alternately pulsed stimulation signals which are applied across different pairs of stimulation electrodes (15a, 15c and 15b, 1 5c) to produce controlled muscle contraction. Muscle movement is resisted by a dynamic load (27), and a position sensor (17) provides a feedback signal indicating the movement actually achivied. The computer (13) uses the feedback signal for modifying the control signal applied to the stimulator.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 107 words
Exercising apparatus for a paralyzed person, comprising a seat (16), grasping means for grasping a leg of a person seated upon said seat and exercise means (19, 33, 35, 27, 17, 12, 13, 14, 50, 15a, 15b, 15c) for exercising said leg characterized in that said exercise means comprises: load means (33, 35, 27) connected to said grasping means for applying a load to said leg; feedback means (17) for generating a feedback signal corresponding to movement of said leg against said load, and stimulation means (12, 13, 14, 50, 15a, 15b, 15c) responsive to said feedback signal for generating a muscle stimulating signal for said leg.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 59 words
Apparatus according to claim l,characterized in that said exercise means further comprises releasible restraining means (22, 23, 24, 25) for restraining movement of said grasping means and force indicating means (26) for providing an indication of the force exerted by said leg against said grasping means when said muscle is stimulated and said grasping means is restrained as aforesaid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 44 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that said load means comprises vertical support means (40, 41a) for suspending a plurlity of selected weights (27) and cable means (33) for transmitting the combined weight force of said weights into said grasping means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus according to claim 3,characterized in that said feedback means comprises a potentiometer mounted for activation by movement of said cable means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
Apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein said seat is movable relative to said grasping means for permitting attachment of said grasping means to either leg of a person seated in said chair.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 64 words
Apparatus for exercising a paralyzed leg comprising: a chair including a seat, stimulation means for stimulating a leg of a person seated in said chair and producing controlled muscular activity therein, dynamic load means for yieldingly resisting movement of said leg when stimulated as aforesaid, and stimulation control means for adjusting the operation of said stimulation means in response to movement of said leg.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 64 words
Apparatus for exercising a paralyzed leg comprising: a chair including a seat, stimulation means for stimulating a leg of a person seated in said chair and producing controlled muscular activity therein, dynamic load means for yieldingly resisting movement of said leg when stimulated as aforesaid, and stimulation control means for adjusting the operation of said stimulation means in response to movement of said leg.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 42 words
Apparatus according to claim 6, and further comprising: isometric load means for engagement against said leg to prevent movement thereof, and strength sensing means for sensing the isometric strength of said leg when engaged by said load means and stimulated as aforesaid.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 37 words
Apparatus according to any preceding claim, characterized in that said stimulation means comprises transcutaneous electrode means (15a, 15b, 15c) for applying said stimulating signal to said leg and circuit means (50) for causing pulsing of said signal.
