Abstract

Abstract A mechanism for aiding the insertion and extraction of an electronic chassis (10) having a plurality of electrical connectors (12-15) on to a mounting tray (11) with a corresponding plurality of mating electrical connectors comprises levered camming hooks (33) on the chassis (10), matched with fixed keeper pins (25) on the tray (11), are rotated by a rotary, torque limiting knob and screw arrangement (50) to engage the keeper pins and thereafter pivot thereon. Upon insertion of the chassis (10) rotation of the knob (50) applies a limited translational force between the electrical connectors (12-15) sufficient to effect a full mating of the connectors but insufficient to cause any damage to the connectors should there be any misalignment therebetween. The mechanism has a very short longitudinal profile in its extracted position, thereby rendering it useful in restricted spaces. The mechanism further conveniently provides a carrying handle (22) for the chassis (10).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 211 words
A mechanism for inserting and extracting an electronics chassis member having a plurality of electrical connectors into and out of a holding fixture member having corresponding mating connectors, characterised in that the mechanism comprises at least one keeper pin (25) secured to one of said members (10,11), at least one pivot pin (31) secured to the other of said members (10,11) at least one lever (32) mounted on the pivot pin (31) and having one end thereof engageable with the keeper pin (25), rotatably actuated translating means (40) including actuation means (50), the translating means (40) having a part secured to said one member (10,11) and a part secured to an end of the lever (32) opposite said one end and adapted upon rotation thereof to pivot the lever (32) about the pivot pin (31) to bring said one end of the lever into engagement with the keeper pin (25) and upon continued rotation thereof to pivot the lever about the keeper pin to translate said one member (10,11) relative to the other member and effect mating of the electrical connectors, and torque limiting clutch means (51) coupled between the actuation means (50) and the translating means (40) for limiting the translational force between the members (10,11) to a predetermined maximum.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 211 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
A mechanism according to claim 1, characterised in that said one member is the electronic chassis member (10), and the other member is the holding fixture member (11).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
A mechanism according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the rotatably actuated translation means (40) comprises an elongated externally threaded shaft (46) and a mating internally threaded cylinder (42).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 47 words
A mechanism according to claim 3, characterised in that the part secured to said one member (10,11) comprises the threaded shaft (46) and the part secured to the other end of the lever (32) comprises a cylindrical boss (41) for rotatably supporting the internally threaded cylinder (42).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
A mechanism according to claim 3 or 4, characterised in that the actuation means in the form of a knob (50) rotatably mounted on the threaded cylinder (42), and in that the torque limiting clutch means (51) is coupled between the knob and threaded cylinder.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 61 words
A mechanism according to claim 5, characterised in that the torque limiting clutch means (51) comprises resilient detent engaging means (52,53,54) mounted for rotation with the knob (50), and cooperable detent means (55) fixed relative to the threaded cylinder (42), the degree of resiliency of the detent engaging means determining the maximum torque transferable from the knob to the threaded cylinder.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A mechanism according to claim 6, characterised in that it further includes adjusting means (59) connected with the detent engaging means (52,53,54) for adjusting the resiliency thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 37 words
A mechanism according to claim 6 or 7, characterised in that the resilient detent engaging means includes a spring loaded ball (52) and the cooperable detent includes at least one groove (55) in the threaded cylinder (42).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 34 words
A mechanism according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the torque limiting clutch means (51) includes means for limiting the maximum translational force between said members (10,11) in but one direction.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 90 words
A mechanism according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the electronics chassis (10) and holding fixture (11) are relatively wide, in that two keeper pins (25), two pivot pins (31), and two levers (32) are located adjacent respective outer sides of the chassis and fixture, and in that the rotatably actuated translating means (40) is secured substantially at the centre of an elongated rigid member (22) interconnecting the other ends of the levers (32), whereby the elongated rigid member serves as a carrying handle for the chassis.
