Abstract
Abstract A heart valve having a pair of leaflets (15) which are guided between their open and closed positions by guides (35) extending outward and received in dog-leg shaped depressions (33). The depressions (33) each have a downstream section (47), which angles outward from a centerline plane of the valve body (13) and a connected vertical upstream section (45). In the closed position the guides reside in intermediate locations to unload the force between the guides and the depression walls.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
180 words
A heart valve prosthesis (11) comprising an annular valve body (13) having an interior wall (16) forming a central passageway (17) therethrough of generally circular cross section, a pair of leaflets (15) proportioned to block blood flow through said passageway when said leaflets are disposed in a closed position, each of said leaflets (15) having an arcuate major edge (23) which abuts said valve body (13) in the closed position and a substantially planar minor edge (25), and means (33, 35) which pivotably interconnects each of said leaflets (15) and said valve body (13) for relative pivotal movement between the closed position and an open position, the interconnecting means including pairs of depressions (33) formed in generally opposite locations in said interior wall (16) and pairs of guides (35) extending laterally from each of said leaflets (15); characterised in that said depressions (33) each have an upstream section (45) which is aligned substantially parallel to the centerline of said central passageway (17) and a downstream section (47) connected to said upstream section that angles outward from the point of connection.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
97 words
A heart valve according to claim 1, wherein said heart valve body (13) is formed with arcuate seat means (26) having surfaces facing downstream with respect to the normal direction (18) of flow of blood through said passageway (17), said seat means (26) being located relative to upstream ends (55) of said depressions (33) so that the force created by backflow blood pressure between said guides (35) and the walls of said depressions (33) is unloaded when said leaflets (15) reach said closed position whereby wear at the location of said interconnecting means (33, 35) is minimised.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
73 words
A heart valve according to claim 2, wherein said location of said seat means (26) is such that, upon the beginning of backflow, said leaflet guides (35) first move from the downstream ends (53) of said downstream sections (47) to the upstream ends (55) of said upstream sections (45) and thereafter finally move downstream within said upstream sections (45) to an intermediate location (49) when said leaflets (15) engage said seat means (26).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
45 words
A heart valve according to claim 3, wherein said upstream sections (45) of said depressions (33) are located to allow said leaflet guides (35) to move during closing between about 0.25 and about 1 mm upstream of said intermediate locations (49) in said depressions (33).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
37 words
A heart valve according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the major portion of each of said leaflets (15) has a configuration substantially that of a segment of a tube of elliptical cross section.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
22 words
A heart valve according to claim 5, wherein said leaflets (15) are mounted so that the convex surfaces (29) thereof face upstream.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
34 words
A heart valve according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein said guides (35) are generally in the shape of sectors of a sphere and said depressions (33) have arcuate cross sections.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
41 words
A heart valve according to any one of claims 1 to 7, and having abutment means (41) on said valve body (13) to engage the downstream surfaces (43) of said leaflets (15) to stop said leaflets (15) in the open positions.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
48 words
A heart valve according to claim 8, wherein said downstream sections (47) of said depressions (33) are angled relative to the centerline plane and relative to said abutment means (41) so that the initial translational closing movement of said leaflets (15) causes said leaflets (15) to pivot outward.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
31 words
A heart valve according to claim 9, wherein said downstream sections (47) of said depressions (33) are inclined toward the centerline plane at angles of between about 10° and about 35°.
