Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 150 words
A rotary tool for removing abnormal intra-arterial obstructions comprising a body (1) having at least one ridge (14) extending therealong, a smooth nose (28) at one end thereof and means at the other end thereof by which said rotary tool may be attached to a rotatable drive shaft (2), wherein the or each ridge (14) extends rearwardly and circumferentially away from said nose (28) in a helical configuration so that rotation of said cutting tool within an artery has a tendency to force blood away from said nose (28), characterised in that the body (1) is generally ellipsoidal and in that the tool is a high speed cutting and abrading tool which, upon rotation, is capable of fracturing and removing relatively hard intra-arterial deposits, without damage to soft arterial walls, by repeated impact on such deposits of a cutting face or faces (1-8) provided by the or each ridge (14).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 150 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
A tool according to claim 1, wherein the angle between the cutting face (18) of the or each ridge (14) and the circumference around said body is between 90 and 130 degrees in order to maximize the ability of said tool to remove relatively hard deposits without damage to soft arterial walls.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 57 words
A tool according to any preceding claim, wherein said body has a cavity (40) therein and a radial fluid port (15) extending from in front of a respective cutting face (18) into said cavity, each port (15) having a circumferential component whereby rotation of said tool has a tendency to force blood inwardly through said port (15).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
A tool according to claim 3, further including a nose fluid port (24) extending along the major axis of the body from the nose (28) of said body to said cavity (40).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A tool according to claim 4, wherein the or each ridge (14) terminates before reaching said nose (28).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 46 words
A tool according to claim 4, wherein each radial fluid port (15) has a component extending along the major axis of the body in a direction away from said nose (28) so that fluid flows into said cavity (40) away from said nose fluid port (24).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 87 words
Apparatus comprising a tool according to any preceding claim; a flexible drive shaft (2) having one end connected to said tool, said shaft having a length that is sufficient to reach from a point outside of a patient's body through the artery to said abnormal deposit; a flexible guiding catheter (3) surrounding said drive shaft (2) over most of its length; and rotary drive means (4) connected to said drive shaft (2) to rotate said cutting tool in the direction that said cutting face (18) is facing.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 58 words
Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said drive shaft (2) contains a hollow channel and said tool includes at least one fluid port (15, 24) communicating with said channel, said apparatus further including a suction device (6, 24) communicating with said channel to draw blood and deposit debris into said fluid port (15, 24) and through said channel.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 31 words
Apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said drive shaft (2) extends through said rotary drive means (4) and terminates in a fluid manifold (5) that communicates with said suction device (6).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 56 words
Apparatus according to claim 9, further including means (10) for selectively preventing said suction device (6) from applying a vacuum to said fluid manifold (5) and wherein said manifold (5) further includes an injection port (23) for injecting fluid into the artery through said manifold (5), drive shaft channel, and cutting tool fluid port (15, 24).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 51 words
Apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said drive shaft (2) extends through a fluid manifold (5) into said rotary drive means (4) and a portion of said drive shaft within said fluid manifold (5) includes a fluid port (26) for allowing fluid communication between said manifold (5) and said hollow channel.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 25 words
Apparatus according to claim 9, 10 or 11, further including a fluid trap (31) communicating with said manifold (5) for collecting said debris- carrying blood.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 14 words
Apparatus according to any one of claims 7-12, further including a catheter fluid manifold
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 19 words
(30) through which said drive shaft (2) passes, said fluid manifold (30) communicating with the interior of said catheter.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 19 words
(30) through which said drive shaft (2) passes, said fluid manifold (30) communicating with the interior of said catheter.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 26 words
Apparatus according to claim 13, further including a catheter suction device (24) communicating with said catheter fluid manifold (30) to remove blood from said catheter (3).
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 25 words
Apparatus according to any one of claims 7-14, wherein said rotary drive means (4) is arranged to rotate said tool at at least 2000 rpm.
