Abstract

Abstract A seal member (20; 36; 48; 114) for fitting over and sealing the opening of a cavity in a bone (10) to allow pressurisation of cement in the cavity has an aperture (32; 118) for sealingly receiving a cement delivery nozzle (34). The seal member may be a balloon seal (20; 36; 48; 114), which may be inflatable and expandable (20;114), or a solid body of conformable material. In use, the seal member is urged against the opening (12), e. g. by force applied by the barrel (136) of a cement delivery gun on an abutment means (52; 122; 222) having an apertured pressure piece (126; 226) shaped to urge the seal member (144) against the mouth of the opening.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 52 words
Apparatus for use in pressurisation of cement in a cavity in a bone, comprising a seal member (20;36;48;114) for fitting over and sealing the opening of the cavity, characterised in that the seal member (20;36;48;114) has an aperture (32;118) therethrough arranged to receive sealingly a nozzle (34) for the delivery of cement.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 52 words
Apparatus for use in pressurisation of cement in a cavity in a bone, comprising a seal member (20;36;48;114) for fitting over and sealing the opening of the cavity, characterised in that the seal member (20;36;48;114) has an aperture (32;118) therethrough arranged to receive sealingly a nozzle (34) for the delivery of cement.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the seal member (20;36;48;114) comprises a flexible, liquid-containing bag deformable to facilitate sealing at an irregularly-shaped cavity opening.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the bag (20;114) has means (21;116) for inflation with liquid.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the bag (20;114) is resiliently extendible by inflation.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the seal member comprises a substantially solid body of conformable material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 52 words
Apparatus according to any preceding claim further including abutment means (26;50;122;222) adapted to overlie the seal member (20;36;48;114) and having an aperture (130) therethrough arranged to receive said delivery nozzle (34); said abutment means (26;50;122;222) having means (26;52;124, 138) for urging it to urge said seal member against said bone cavity opening.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 44 words
Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein in use, said delivery nozzle (34) is provided by a dispensing means (136) and wherein said urging means (52;133) is an abutment surface of the abutment means arranged to be abuttable against by a said dispensing means (136).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 26 words
Apparatus according to claim 7 wherein said abutment means comprises an apertured pressure piece (126;226) shaped to urge the seal member (114) against the cavity opening.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 13 words
Apparatus according to claim 8 wherein said pressure piece (126) is substantially banana-shaped.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 41 words
Apparatus according to claim 8 or 9 wherein said pressure piece (126) is shaped so as to be usable in a plurality of different configurations in each of which it tends to urge the seal member (114) to a different form.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 54 words
Apparatus according to claim 8, 9 or 10 wherein the abutment surface is provided by an abutment assembly comprising an apertured bridge piece (134;234) arranged to contact the pressure piece (126;226) on either side of its aperture (130), and a receiving portion (124) adapted to receive an end portion of said dispensing means (136).
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 103 words
Abutment means (50;122;222) for use in the pressurisation of cement in a bone cavity using an apertured seal member (48;114) for sealing the opening of the cavity, said aperture of the seal member being arranged to receive sealingly a nozzle (34) of a dispensing means for the delivery of cement; said abutment means (50;122;222) comprising an abutment member which is arranged to overlie the seal member and which has an aperture for the passage of said nozzle (34); and wherein said abutment means is adapted to be urged by the dispensing means to urge the seal member to seal the bone cavity opening.
Claim 14
