Abstract
Abstract Radioactive seeds contained in a string-like carrier, such as absorbable sutures, are shielded during shipping and storage inside a curved tube of dense material having two open ends. The carrier protrudes through at least one end of the tube. Preferably, one carrier end has removable means for preventing the end from entering the tube prematurely, and the other carrier end is attached to a needle. The seeds are located a sufficient distance from the open ends of the curved tube to prevent radiation from escaping from the tube therethrough.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim
97 words
A device for handling radioactive seeds comprising: a. a curved tube of dense material open at both ends, said tube having an interior diameter large enough to allow said seeds to be moved freely therein and side walls of sufficient thickness to prevent radiation from penetrating therethrough; b. a plurality of radioactive seeds within said tube arranged consecutively and spaced apart in a string-like carrier which protrudes through at least one of said open ends, said seeds being located a sufficient distance from either of said open ends to prevent radiation from escaping from said open ends.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
97 words
A device for handling radioactive seeds comprising: a. a curved tube of dense material open at both ends, said tube having an interior diameter large enough to allow said seeds to be moved freely therein and side walls of sufficient thickness to prevent radiation from penetrating therethrough; b. a plurality of radioactive seeds within said tube arranged consecutively and spaced apart in a string-like carrier which protrudes through at least one of said open ends, said seeds being located a sufficient distance from either of said open ends to prevent radiation from escaping from said open ends.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
67 words
The device according to claim 1, wherein said string-like carrier has a first end protruding through one of said open ends of said tube having removable means attached thereto for preventing said first end of said carrier from entering said tube; and said string-like carrier has a second end protruding through the opposite open end of said tube and attached to needle means for penetrating body tissue.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
The device according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said tube is stainless steel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
The device according to claim 1 or 2, where said tube is formed with a substantially complete circle with said open ends opposing one another.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
13 words
The device according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said seeds contain iodine-125.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
15 words
The device according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said carrier is an absorbable suture.
