Abstract

Abstract Lens elements for fibre optic waveguide connectors comprise a body of translucent material (3) having at least one lens surface (21). Extending forwardly of and beyond the lens surface are one or more projections (22). The projections are such that when two lens elements are held together with the lenses face-to-face, interengagement of the respective projections ensures that the optical axes of the lens elements are coincident or parallel, so minimising optical data transmission losses in use of the connectors, In one embodiment, the projections have a planar end face (23) lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the lens, and in this case abutment of the said faces on respective lens elements ensures alignment. The invention also provides connectors for fibre optic waveguides, and a method of connecting such waveguides, using lens elements of the invention.
