Abstract
Abstract A medical article having a layered antithrombogenic surface is useful as a polymeric implant, for example, a catheter or a kidney dialysis membrane. The article comprises a polymeric substrate coated with chitosan to which is appended an antithrombotic agent. A process for rendering the surface of a polymer antithrombogenic is disclosed.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
25 words
A medical article of manufacture having a layered nonthrombogenic surface characterized by: a layer of chitosan, and an antithrombotic agent bonded to said chitosan coating.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
25 words
A medical article of manufacture having a layered nonthrombogenic surface characterized by: a layer of chitosan, and an antithrombotic agent bonded to said chitosan coating.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
21 words
An article of Claim 1 further characterized by the feature that it is bonded to a natural or synthetic polymeric substrate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
The article according to any of the foregoing claims characterized in that said antithrombotic agent is prostaglandin, albumin, a sulfated polysaccharide, or heparin.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
23 words
The article according to any of the foregoing claims characterized in that said polymeric substrate is a catheter or a kidney dialysis membrane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
26 words
The article according to any of the foregoing claims characterized in that said polymeric substrate is silicone rubber, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, polypropylene, teflon, or cellulose.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
47 words
The article according to any of the foregoing claims characterized in that the level of chitosan in said chitosan coating is in the range of about 0.01 to 100 mg/cm 2 and the level of heparin is in the range of 0.1 to 7.0 I.U.'s/cm 2 .
Claim 8
Independent Claim
79 words
A method of making the article according to any of the foregoing claims characterized by the steps: (a) priming said polymeric surface so as to render it receptive to the coating of a chitosan salt thereon, (b) coating said chitosan salt from acid solution onto said polymeric surface, (c) reacting the resulting chitosan salt coated polymeric surface with base to convert said chitosan salt to free chitosan, and (d) bonding an antithrombogenic agent to said chitosan coated polymeric article.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
36 words
The process according to Claim 7 further characterized by the feature that bonding said chitosan coated polymeric article with said antithrombogenic agent takes place in the presence of a chemically effective amount of a boron hydride.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
26 words
A process according to any of the foregoing claims characterized further by treating the resulting antithrombogenic article with glutaraldehyde to crosslink the chitosan and antithrombogenic agent.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
40 words
The process according to any of the foregoing claims further characterized by the feature that said chitosan coating is covalently or ionically bonded to said polymeric substrate and said antithrombotic agent is covalently or ionically bonded to said chitosan coating.
