Abstract

Abstract A method for applying and removing orthodontic brackets using an orthodontic bracket adhesive and an abrasive, without damage to tooth enamel, wherein the adhesive contains a non-toxic, inorganic filler which is insoluble in mouth fluids and has a Mohs hardness less than 4.5, and the abrasive is a non-toxic, inorganic material having a Mohs hardness greater than that of the adhesive filler but less than 5.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 107 words
A method for applying an orthodontic bracket to a tooth surface using a polymerizable composition, and for later removing said bracket and adhesive composition therefrom using a solid abrasive tool, characterized in that: (1) said polymerizable adhesive ccnposition conprises a finely divided first inorganic material admixed with a polymerizable resin, said first inorganic material being non-toxic, essentially insoluble in mouth fluids, and having a Mohs hardness less than 4.5; and (2) said solid abrasive tool comprises a second inorganic material, said second inorganic material being non-toxic and having a Mohs hardness which is greater than the Mohs hardness of said first inorganic material and less than 5.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 107 words
A kit for applying an orthodontic bracket to a tooth surface comprising a polymerizable composition, and a solid abrasive tool for removing said bracket and adhesive composition from the tooth, characterized in that: (1) said polymerizable adhesive composition comprises a finely divided first inorganic material admixed with a polymerizable resin, said first inorganic material being non-toxic, essentially insoluble in mouth fluids, and having a Mohs hardness less than 4.5; and (2) said solid abrasive tool comprises a second inorganic material, said second inorganic material being non-toxic and having a Mohs hardness which is greater than the Mohs hardness of said first inorganic material and less than 5.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 50 words
A kit according to claim 2, wherein said first inorganic material is selected from Table I, said second inorganic material is selected from Table II, and said second inorganic material has a Mohs hardness at least 1 Mohs hardness unit greater than the Mohs hardness of said first inorganic material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
A kit according to either of claims 2 and 3 wherein said first inorganic material is selected fran the group consisting of kaolinite, mica, pyrophyllite, and talc, and said second inorganic material is selected from the group consisting of calcite, dolomite, and marble.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 107 words
An orthodontic bracket adhesive composition particularly one usable in the method of claim 1 or the kit of any of claims 2 to 4 characterized in that said orthodontic bracket adhesive composition comprises said first inorganic material admixed with at least one part of a polymerizable, two-part,, BIS-GMA resin, one part of said two-part resin containing catalyst, the other part of said two-part resin containing accelerator, said first inorganic material having a Mohs hardness less than 3 and a mean particle diameter between 1 and 100 micrometers, and with said first inorganic material being at least 25% of the total weight of said orthodontic bracket adhesive composition.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
An orthodontic bracket adhesive composition according to claim 5, further characterized in that said first inorganic material is selected fran the group consisting of kaolinite, mica, pyrophyllite, and talc.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 36 words
An orthodontic bracket adhesive composition according to claim 6, further characterized in that said first inorganic material is talc and said talc is 50 to 70% of the total weight of said orthodontic bracket adhesive composition.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 67 words
The dental abrasive composition particularly one usable in the method according to claim 1 or a kit according to claim 2, characterized in that said abrasive composition comprises finely divided abrasive filler admixed with a solid binder, said abrasive filler being non-toxic and having a Mohs hardness less than 5, and with said abrasive filler being at least 30% of the total weight of said abrasive composition.
Claim 11
