Dilatation catheter for vessel or tissue restrictions
Abstract
Abstract The catheter has an expander (2), a force transmission device (4) and an activator (3) which all operate mechanically and are mechanically interconnected, using an opposed pair of strips for expansion. The strips lie parallel when relaxed to extend to an hypothetical extension of the tube (1) until their interval is expanded by the power and activator components (4,3). Several strips can also be used which are arranged round the periphery and are commonly activated. Power transmission is by a pull or twist device which moves in relation to the activator. The strips take the form of spring tongues joined at one end to the tube and to the activator at the far end. These tongues are joined into a basket-type mesh and bend more easily at their ends than in the centre. If the strips come in beam form, these adjust normal to the tube length and thrust off the pull or twist device (4) via toggle lever or inclined plane and are sealed from the tube by an enclosing sleeve.
