Abstract

Abstract An endoluminal bar consists of insulated wire made into a cage-like structure which surrounds an inflatable balloon, leaving spaces round the circumference. These spaces are formed into a network by a regular pattern of welds in the surrounding insulation; this network can stretch circumferentially; the surrounding material can be softened thermally at least once so as to permit expansion by applying a voltage across the wire. Pref. forms of the insulation are polyethylene, polycaprolactone, copolyester, ethylene-vinyl acetate, PVC or thermoplastic polyurethane.
