Controllable pitch screw for converting torque into thrust - has flexible blades extending along boss and secured to ring to allow varying inclination
Abstract
Abstract The controllable pitch screw for converting rotational - into thrust-energy is intended either for propelling craft through fluids or for moving the fluids themselves. It has a conical boss (4) directly fixed to a shaft (1), with longitudinal slots (10) in the tip for sliding tabs (6) at one end of the blades (5). The blades, of flexible material lie with their area centreline (X-X) parallel to the shaft axis. Tabs (7) at their cone-bass ends are held in pivot bearings (11) set readily in an adjusting ring (12) between shaft housing and boss. A separate actuator (3) for this ring allows variation of the blades inclination to the shaft axis.
