Body cavity measuring probe - has thread stretched across two retractable sensing arms giving required measurement in extended position
Abstract
Abstract The medical probe for measuring the inside of a body cavity, e.g. the uterus has a handle for remote operation carrying a tube (11) inside which the measuring head is retracted before insertion. This head has two resilient arms (2) which spread apart when moved outwards beyond the end of the tube. The arms are mounted on a hollow spindle (1) which is advanced or retracted by a sliding part of the operating handle. A thread passing through the spindle travels around a sensor (4) on the tip of one arm to another sensor (3) on the tip of the other arm. The length of this thread between the two tips gives the required dimension, this being indicated on a scale on the handle.
