Bone prosthesis with fibre-reinforced duroplastic core - has outer layer contg. bioactive substance e.g. phosphate glass or glass ceramic
Abstract
Abstract New material for medical technology consists of a core with a fibre-reinforced duroplastic synthetic material as the carrier element, with a surface layer which is compatible with the body. The surface layer has a bioactive substance as an additive. Pref. bioactive substances are phosphate glasses and glass ceramic. The material is intended as a prosthesis for human bones e.g. the hip joints. Incorporation of bioactive substances such as phosphate glasses or glass-ceramics into the surface layer permits or promotes direct growth of bone in or one the surface layer, so that integration of the prostheses with existing bone structures is improved without the need for special cements (the exothermic hardening of which can damage the bone marrow).
