Permselective membrane for artificial kidney - contg. support modified on blood-side with polyelectrolyte and or enzyme dissociating toxins
Abstract
Abstract Permselective dialysis and diafiltration membranes, for use as artificial kidney, consists of a membrane support material provided, on blood-side, with a surface-layer of polyelectrolytes and bonded to support either covalently or adsorptively. The surface layer is pref. additionally modified with enzymes, which dissociate partic. those toxic materials present in blood which find difficulty in passing through membrane on account of their mol. wt. and/or charge. The elimination of toxic metabolites is selectively increased without enlarging the membrane pores. Membrane allows an improved discrimination of toxic metabolites as against water, urea and aminoacids.
